SPECiALTY COFFEE
Specialty (grade) coffee is considered a healthy and socially conscious drink. Unlike commercial coffee, specialty coffee attends to the process from the farmers to the cup.
The growing condition, processing methods, screening beans process, roasting skill and brewing technique are instrumental. Farmers would get a higher pay from better quality beans to improve their livelihood.
Specialty coffee is usually prepared by hand-brewing. The gradual brewing process is soothing and re-energizing. Generally specialty coffee is not strong, but sweet and tart with a lingering aftertaste. It reveals the authentic flavour of good coffee.
Why is drinking specialty coffee a therapy?
Specialty coffee is high in antioxidants (light roasting) and low in caffeine (arabica bean). A variety of aromas and flavours (floral, fruits, nuts, herbs, cocoa, etc.) passes through our olfactory system and then simulates our limbic system for good mood and memories recall. Moderate caffeine intake can make us happier and smarter.
HEALTH BENEFITs OF DRINKING COFFEE
In the past 10-20 years, there is growing body of research showing that drinking coffee regularly has certain health benefits including lowing the risk of cardiovascular disease, cancers, type-2 diabetes, etc. Black coffee drinkers tend to have lower risk of mortality, and their consumptions are usually 2 – 4 cups (160 ml) a day.
In 2022, there was another further study published in The Annals of Internal Medicine suggesting that “The lower risk of dying associated with moderate levels of coffee drinking was true regardless of whether you drank decaffeinated coffee, instant coffee, or ground coffee.” and both black coffee and coffee with some natural sugar (not artificial) offer the same benefit.
