aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is a holistic healthcare profession encompassing both science and art. Aromatic oils were first used over 3500 years ago for religious, perfumery, and medical purposes. Today aromatherapy is used to relieve stress, boost our moods, and improve our overall mental wellbeing.
This definition of aromatherapy is the use of natural plant extracts (essential oils), hydrosols (aromatic water from plants) and carrier oils (base oil to dilute essential oils) in various ways to heal the body, mind and spirit. We call this health benefit “therapeutic”. However, fragrance oils and perfumes containing synthetic or artificially made scents CANNOT produce the same health benefits. Breathing in too much of these scents would cause headaches, nausea, throat irritation and diminish our sense of smell.
A growing body of research about aromatherapy’s therapeutic use shows its abilities to enhance mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. Research shows aromatherapy has a variety of positive effects on helping anxiety and depression, reducing pain such as headache, body ache and PMS symptom, boosting mood and relaxation, improving memory, and sleep quality, etc. We can enjoy the benefit of aromatherapy through inhaling , massage, hand/foot bath, adding the oils in our daily body wash and cream.
Although many essential oils are available in the market, some of them may be altered with low quality oils or even synthetic oils for a higher profit. For safety, it is advisable to first consult the professionals before applying aromatherapy in your daily life.
